No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
